Micro-project progress
“Climate Management and Protection of Andean Ecosystems in the Huarocondo Micro-watershed,” a critical micro-project, is advancing with the financial assistance of a German Cooperation in Peru, in conjunction with the Pachaillariy Association and the Urinsaya Ccollana Huarocondo Peasant Community.
The Pachaillariy Association is proud of the progress achieved thus far. The community of Urinsaya Ccollana (Huarocondo district, Anta-Cusco province) has reached important milestones toward safeguarding and strengthening its ecosystem in the Huerta Huaycco sector. Community members are actively accomplishing tasks assigned to them by the board.
Five thousand Q'euña Plants and a Communal Plant Nursery
Crucial for the local ecosystem are 5,000 q’euña plants, a species essential for local biodiversity and the fight against climate change. Thanks to the German Cooperation in Peru, the Pachaillariy Association, and community members, these plants have found a home in our communal plant nursery. The Association’s technicians have created an irrigation system to help these plants adapt to their new environment.
Strengthening Resilience with Cattle Fences and Ancestral Reconnection
To further protect the ecosystem, we have acquired and (partially) installed cattle nets in the impact zone, particularly in Huerta Huaycco. With institutional technical support and training, community members of Huarocondo have carried out essential tasks such as selective tree felling and the placement of posts for cattle fences, which will protect the watershed and keep out cattle, sheep and other animals. This is revitalizing ancestral practices, such as Ayni and Minka, and reconnecting the community with the wisdom and traditions from Inca era.
Collective Work and Future Vision
This project would not have been possible without the dedication, organization and labors of local women. The community’s board of directors and the president of the Pachaillariy Association have also been key to the project’s implementation. Moving forward, we are committed to a more resilient and sustainable future for our community and its precious Andean ecosystems.
